Tuxia Pty Ltd - www.tuxia.com
programmer during my practial training
September, 2001 - February, 2002 / Sydney, Australia
It is an integral part of my studies at the University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen in Bocholt, Germany, that the students work for half a year. However, it was my choice to go abroad.
I participated in the program "Practical Training Semester Abroad" by the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. Here is a quote from their letter of recommendation to give you an idea what it is about.
"[...] This program consists of a six month structured,
studies-related, supervised practical activity abroad in an enterprise or
research institute. The program is administered by the Carl Duisberg
Gesellschaft e.V., Cologne, on behalf of and with the financial support of
the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
Mr. Jörn Vehoff was one of 125 candidates chosen through a highly
competitive and rigorous selection process [...]."
You can also read the complete letter.
Tuxia in Sydney uses a Linux-only environment to develop software for Internet devices such as settop boxes and thin-clients. I worked on various projects involving Mozilla and Embedded Linux.
I built chromes for Mozilla using XUL and JavaScript. This gave me a good knowledge of the Mozilla project and how to change the browser's GUI and general behaviour.
I also wrote X Window applications using C++ and FLTK.
Vernum GmbH - www.vernum.com
founder, project manager, developer
January, 2000 - February, 2004 / Germany
Two friends of mine are in the egg business and we had the idea of starting a marketplace for eggs on the Internet with the ability to trade eggs in different forms of auctions (normal, reverse), we delivered market news and offered a place to exchange information.
As the sole developer, I used Perl, PHP and mySQL to create a dynamic and flexible system to trade the same product in German, English and Dutch. In a later version, access via mobile phones was also integrated.
We closed the auction in February 2004 due to other priorities.
